Our students don’t just love Mandarin — they speak it, read it, perform it at Lincoln Center, and go on to NYC’s most sought-after schools.Ages 18 months – 12th grade · AP & IB preparation · UES · Now Enrolling
From First Sounds to Fluency: A Complete K–12 Journey
Hello, Mandarin's curriculum spans 10 levels, from age 18 months through 12th grade — including AP and IB preparation. Below is the full staircase. Parents enrolling a 2-year-old can see exactly where the journey leads. Parents joining us later can see exactly where their child fits.

A Note on Our Exam Philosophy — YCT and HSK
Parents sometimes ask why we use YCT for younger students rather than jumping straight to HSK. The answer is intentional — and it matters for your child's long-term success.
1
Why YCT?
YCT (Youth Chinese Test) is specifically designed for children ages 6–15. Its vocabulary, contexts, and question formats are age-appropriate — which means children can demonstrate real ability, score well, and build genuine confidence. That confidence is not a consolation prize. It is the fuel for continued learning.
2
Why HSK?
HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is for high schoolers and adults (beginner to advanced) requiring a broader vocabulary, including professional contexts. Pushing a 6-year-old into HSK before they are ready — because it sounds more prestigious — risks a discouraging result that undermines motivation at exactly the wrong moment.

Our Path
-
Build confidence with YCT, arrive at HSK 4–5 in high school.
-
The combination we guide every family toward is: YCT through middle school → HSK 4–5 in high school → AP Chinese. This sequence is among the strongest possible credentials for college applications — and it begins with making sure your child loves the language at every step.
-
Most of our current families enrolled before age 4. Many are still with us today. The table above is not aspirational — it describes students we are teaching right now.
-
Several of our current students are 8 years old and above. They are reading Chinese texts independently, building advanced vocabulary, and preparing for formal examinations. This is not a future capability. It is our present reality.

Our founder, Dr. Jiaoyue Lyu, holds a doctorate from Penn, specifically focused on K–12 Chinese language education. She currently designs and teaches the Chinese curriculum at a prestigious PK–12 IB international school in New York City. Hello, Mandarin's curriculum reflects that same full-journey design.
