History & Philosophy

  • Hello, Mandarin! is an arts-based Mandarin immersion program for early childhood learners. Founded in 2019, our research-backed curriculum for learners (1.5 through 12 years old) pairs music, arts, and intentionally joyful learning to build a foundation to fluency.

  • In the last 5 years, Hello, Mandarin has been invited to perform at cultural galas and showcases at New York University, Bryant Park, the Museum of Chinese in America, Queens Museum, Apollo Theater, Cipriani 42nd St many more.

  • We believe that the best learning happens when we live the language through joyful, developmentally appropriate experiences. Our classes culminate in showcase performances across New York City.

The Founder

  • Dr. Jiaoyue Lyu is the founder and Head of School of Hello, Mandarin! Dr. Lyu holds a Doctorate in Education from the University of Pennsylvania, and a master’s degree in Music Education from New York University, where she graduated in the top five percent of her program.

  • Before founding Hello, Mandarin!, Dr. Lyu was internationally recognized for her work as a Guqin performing artist, giving the first solo Guqin recitals at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

  • She brings this artistic depth into her teaching—using storytelling, movement, music, and visual arts to make Mandarin joyful, expressive, and developmentally attuned for very young children.

  • Dr. Lyu’s arts-based Mandarin curriculum is intentionally crafted to nurture curiosity, confidence, and authentic communication, helping toddlers build language through imaginative play, sensory exploration, and meaningful teacher-child interaction.

  • Under her leadership, Hello, Mandarin! offers a uniquely rich early-childhood experience—one where language, culture, and the arts come together to inspire a lifelong love of learning.
